International Women’s Month
Tuesday, 29 March 2022What would the women of Urner Barry tell a young woman just starting out on their career path?
Karyn Rispoli
Eggs, Market Reporter
1) Listen more than you talk. This is often good advice but especially true in market reporting where gathering information is paramount. 2) Ask questions. As a “newbie,” there's a short window of time where you can plead ignorance... take advantage! 3) Be authentic. Market reporting has a lot to do with relationships; being true to yourself and with others will go a long way in fostering those relationships.
Robyn Rautenstrauch
Customer Engagement
Ask questions and try to learn as much as you can, even if someone seems unapproachable. Then when the tides are turned, make sure you listen and help out others to help them learn and grow, because having a strong team will lead to the best results.
Ashley Leonard
Senior Account Manager
Advice for women starting out in my career is always to be confident in yourself. Continue to push through any challenges and work as a team.
Sarah Hartig
Assistant Product Manager
First, be curious, and don't be afraid to ask a lot of questions or ask for help. Being independent is important, but I have learned over time that people are generally happy to help others. Not once have I personally thought of someone who has asked me for help in the past as weak or helpless, so just ask! And second....girl, stop apologizing!
Stephanie Goldzman
Marketing Assistant
Confidence is key & never sell yourself short! Also, never be afraid to ask too many questions, that's how you learn & grow!
Lorin Castiglione
Seafood Market Reporter/Marketing & Events
Everyone has a starting point in their career. It is not a downfall; it is an opportunity to ask ALL THE THINGS with little expectation. Play into your strengths and continue to grow and develop where your confidence lacks through practice, developing relationships with industry peers, and continued education through the endless resources online.

Be confident and secure with yourself.
Laura Zinger
Sales Manager, Territory Sales
Don't set your expectations to align with what other people achieve. That will only limit the heights you can reach. Remove all of the friction, be yourself, and always keep learning. If you don't feel ready, do it anyway. Be unafraid. Be human.
Maria Morales
Creative Lead / Marketing
I've been a stay-at-home mom, an older college student, and a working mother. Each of those had its challenges. Never think that you have to keep up with what everyone else is doing... just find your own path. And stop saying "sorry" for things that are not in your control - something that I have to pull myself back from doing too!
Tara Wyckoff
Data Assistant - IMN
Don't give up, I never saw myself working in an office publishing and proofing data. First day was the hardest but repetition is key. Once you get your rhythm everything else will fall into place. Hold your head up high and if you make a mistake, you are only human, dust yourself off and try again.

Proofread. And then proofread again.
Rachel Little
Sales Assistant
Don't focus on what others are doing, your hard work and dedication will speak for itself and will take you far!
Janice Schrieber
Seafood - Editor
It’s all about balance. You will not get everything done and if you are part of a growing family give yourself some leniency. Everything will get done and don't be afraid to ask for help. Most of the industries are changing more and you will see many leading ladies taking prominent positions at conferences, board meetings, etc... these women are approachable and seek out an introduction and have a conversation with them about their path.
Jamie Chadwick
Director, Content, Editorial
Don't be afraid to ask questions. Take risks, because every misstep is a lesson that you wouldn't have otherwise learned. Read. Learn from others. We're all shaped by our own experiences, but if we pay attention we can benefit from the lessons and experiences of countless others who came before. You were hired because they recognized something special in you. Spend your time cultivating what that is and the work will speak for itself. Your unique way of thinking and doing is needed in the world.
Christin Chase
Director of Data Processing - IMN
Always believe in yourself and ask for help when needed. Good things come to those that put in the work and don't give up.
